A new study published in the Nov. 21 issue of the [New England Journal of Medicine] found that a handful of nuts everyday can reduce early death and prolong life.
Dr. Charles Foggs, director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Cancer Research at Danafabo Cancer Institute in Boston, and his colleagues completed the study. They followed 119000 participants in eating nuts for up to 30 years. During time, the respective number of men and women died was 11000 and 16000. The comparative study found that the mortality rate was reduced by 11% in those who ate nuts once a week, then the risk of death was reduced by 13% in those who ate nuts 2 to 4 times a week, and the overall mortality rate was reduced by 20% in those who ate the most nuts (28 grams of nuts a day). The study also found that eating nuts often also reduces the risk of death from cancer, heart disease and respiratory diseases.
Dr. Foggs said, nuts are nutritious and contain large amounts of unsaturated fatty acids, cellulose, multivitamin, trace elements and antioxidants, which can lower cholesterol.
