Ulcerative colitis is an IBD with unclear etiology, but the course of disease is long and recurrent. According to a new study in the United States, eating more walnuts can play a preventive and therapeutic role in Ulcerative colitis.
A joint research team from the University of Connecticut and Texas University of Agriculture and Technology conducted a mouse experiment. For two weeks, the researchers fed walnuts to mice with ulcerative colitis, which accounted for 14% of their daily diet. The results showed that the repair function of colonic mucous was significantly enhanced by mice of being fed with walnuts, and the colon injury caused by ulcerative colitis was much less than the mice without walnut intake. Moreover, after eating walnuts, the metabolites in excreta changed, which might form a part of intestinal protection. The study was published in the journal [Nutrition].
Dr. Daniel Rosenberg, the leader of the study, pointed out that a large number of natural compounds and phytochemicals in walnuts have been shown to have a variety of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and anticancer. So he recommends that patients with ulcerative colitis eat 20 to 25 walnuts every day. Next, the research team will delve into the beneficial effects of walnuts on other types of IBD.
