1. Sunflower seed harvest area increased by 1.98%

From 2016 to 2020, the harvested area of sunflower seeds in the world has showed an upward trend. In 2020, the global harvest area of sunflower seeds reached 27.8743 million hectares, an increase of 1.98% compared with 2019.

2. Sunflower seed yield shows an increasing trend

From 2017/18 to 2020/21, sunflower seeds in the world as a whole showed an upward trend. In 2020/21, global sunflower seed production reached 49.11 million tons, down 8.95% from 2019/20. According to the US Department of Agriculture's December 2021 forecast, global sunflower seed production will increase to 57.04 million tons in 2021-22.

3.Sunflower seed imports declined

From 2017/18 to 2020/21, global imports of sunflower seeds increased as a whole. In 2020/21, global imports of sunflower seeds reached 2.80 million tons, down 18.60% from 2019/20. According to the US Department of Agriculture's December 2021 forecast, global sunflower seed imports will rebound to 3.52 million tons in 2021-22.  

4. Sunflower seed exports will reach 3.81 million tons

From 2017/18 to 2020/21, global exports of sunflower seeds increased first and then decreased. Global exports of sunflower seeds reached 2.90 million tons in 2020/21, up 9.37% from 2019/20. According to the US Department of Agriculture's December 2021 forecast, global sunflower seed exports will rise significantly to 3.81 million tons in 2021-22.

5. The pressing of sunflower seeds will break through 50 million tons

The global peak for 2017/18-2020/21 was close to 50 million tons. The global pressing of sunflower seeds reached 45.43 million tons in 2020/21, down 8.26% from 2019/20. According to the US Department of Agriculture's December 2021 forecast, the global pressing of sunflower seeds will increase to 52.33 million tons in 2021-22.

6.Sunflower seed storage as a whole showed a downward trend

From 2017/18 to 2020/21, the global sunflower seed storage showed a declining trend. In 2020/21, global sunflower seed storage was 1.93 million tons, down 26.34% from 2019/20. According to the US Department of Agriculture's forecast data in December 2021, the global sunflower seed storage will rise to 2.28 million tons in 2021-22.

The scale of world sunflower seed production fluctuates and trade develops rapidly. In terms of production, the regional distribution of sunflower seed production in the world is relatively concentrated, and Ukraine and Russia are the main producing countries. In terms of trade, Turkey is the main importer of sunflower seeds, while Russia, Ukraine and the EU are the main export countries and regions of sunflower seeds. Overall, the global sunflower seed market is developing well. In 2020/21, the global supply and demand scale of sunflower seeds decreased, but according to the USDA forecast data, in 2020/22, the global supply and demand scale of sunflower seeds will show a large increase. Sunflower seeds are mainly used for oil, food and feeding.

Sunflower seed oil is an important oil in China, and peanut, soybean, rape and known as the four oils. Common sunflower seeds have been regarded as healthy leisure food because of their delicious taste and rich nutrition. In terms of feed application, sunflower meal is mainly used as raw material of poultry protein feed. Based on the strong downstream demand, the global sunflower seed market is expected to expand further in the future.
